to keep you from the forbidden woman,
from the adulteress with her smooth words.
Proverbs 7:5 ESV
Sometimes it seems like God gives us commandments to do this or don’t do that without any reason. Just because. That can’t be said of Proverbs 7:1-5 because verse 5 is the “why” verse. The previous four verses were instructions and this verse tells why we should obey those instructions.
Psalm 119:11 says, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Here in verses 1-5, the writer gives us the same concept, but he uses more explicit language and imagery.
My son, keep my words
and treasure up my commandments with you;
keep my commandments and live;
keep my teaching as the apple of your eye;
bind them on your fingers;
write them on the tablet of your heart.
Say to wisdom, “You are my sister,”
and call insight your intimate friend,
to keep you from the forbidden woman,
from the adulteress with her smooth words.
